Artist of the Week : Voimaa

Voimaa is dedicated to pushing the Native Flute as far as she can take it. Early on in her career, Voimaa decided that she would not conform to tradition. Knowing that the tradition is not hers to play with, and believing that there is something different which could be expressed with the same instrument. Voimaa’s music has become a cocktail of pop, dance and instrumental music – it moves the audience both emotionally and physically, creating moments with music that has no barriers in order to enjoy.

Born in 1997 and raised by her suburban dwelling, Ukrainian parents; Voimaa spent her childhood attempting to find a balance between Soviet and Canadian values. Despite family pressures to take an interest in the STEM fields, Voimaa was drawn to the humanities – taking an active interest in world cultures and music. By 2009, at age 12 she had discovered the Native Flute. Voimaa sped through the learning process. Teaching herself how to play, she used all manner of available influences as musical guidelines. Voimaa began to see a career in music at age 14 after acquiring an apprenticeship in one of Toronto’s top folk venues. It was there that she fully threw herself into the notion of formal musical education. Voimaa spent her teenage years observing and studying world and folk music. She soon found her musical interests were not naturally confined to folk but rather a fusion of genres. Looking to everyone from Yanni to Lady Gaga, Voimaa developed her own interpretation of how instrumental music should sound. During the summer of 2016, Voimaa became actively involved in the Canadian music scene– she began performing in local venues and working with Rez Rock band ‘Nadjiwan’. Soon, Voimaa found herself on such notable stages as Young & Dundas Square, TEDx, and a UK tour. To date, Voimaa has released 2 E.P’s (Luna & Lacuna) and 1 Single (P.O.P). In August of 2019 she released her new self-titled project ‘VOIMAA’ .
